France, officially the French Republic (French: La République française), is a sovereign country in Western Europe, with Corsica lying off its southeastern coast in the Mediterranean Sea. France is a constitutional republic under a semi-presidential system with both an executive President serving as head of state and a legislative Prime Minister serving as head of government over the Council of Ministers.

France consists of thirteen administrative regions, with twelve in Metropolitan France and a thirteenth, Corsica (French: Corse), lying in the Mediterranean. These regions each receive proportional representation in the National Assembly and elect two Senators.
